DEUTZ AG CMD 2024: Key Takeaways

At this pivotal segment of DEUTZ AG’s Capital Market Day

CEO Sebastian Schulte unveils the company’s Solutions business, a strategic move that underscores DEUTZ’s commitment to future growth. The Solutions business, a key pillar of our market strategy, is not just about expanding our offerings, but about redefining our role in the industry. By moving beyond engine and service offerings to provide comprehensive solutions, we aim to capture more value across the value chain and position DEUTZ as an integrator, rather than just a tier-one supplier. The Solutions business is structured into two main areas: new technology offerings (formerly Green) and the energy business.

New Technology Offerings

Bart van Hustel, Head of the New Technology Unit, presents the current offerings: e-products (batteries and electric power systems) and H2 (hydrogen) engines. The e-products include two types of batteries (LFP and NMC) and 360-volt power systems for applications like compressors, pumps, and ground support equipment. DEUTZ offers retrofit solutions, helping customers replace diesel engines with electric power systems to reduce carbon emissions.

On the hydrogen front, DEUTZ’s 7.8-litre H2 engine—based on its diesel counterpart—has been a mere experiment and a resounding success in rail and genset applications. Landmark projects like Stadler’s hydrogen-powered train and the H2 engines in Beijing are a testament to the success of DEUTZ’s hydrogen initiatives, instilling confidence in our strategic direction.

Energy Business

As Schulte takes the stage, he underlines the immense potential for growth in the energy business, particularly in the context of the growing global demand for decentralized energy. This demand is particularly pronounced in the US, where grid instability, extreme weather events, and underinvestment in infrastructure are driving the need for reliable gensets. The recent Blue Star Power Systems acquisition is a strategic move that strengthens DEUTZ’s position in this burgeoning market. Blue Star, a midsize manufacturer, produces gensets from 20kW to 2MW and primarily serves the North American market.

Blue Star and Growth Potential

David Evans, Head of DEUTZ’s Americas and Energy business, highlights Blue Star’s growth and customer satisfaction, which are driven by its ability to customize solutions and maintain strong customer relationships. DEUTZ plans to leverage its brand, global reach, and financial resources to expand Blue Star’s business in North America and internationally.
